Module aims:
- To provide you with intermediate and advanced conceptual and practical learning in entrepreneurship and innovation in different specialist sectors.
- To develop an independent research and online collaborative skills necessary to engage in enterprise and innovation practices in new and existing organisations through a mix of study activities and self-selected experiential projects participants will
- To encourage the student to do so by articulating how entrepreneurship and innovation can be used to satisfy individual goals, while contributing to solving societal problems in an ethical and sustainable manner.
Brief module description/summary:
This module provides an introduction to the core concepts, policy challenges and ethical issues in Sustainable Development. It is aimed at a wide range of learners and provides a grounding in sustainability ideas and issues that is self-contained but also prepares students for getting the best from the complementary strategies of making organisations sustainable
Module learning outcomes:
- Develop a critical understanding on the definitions of sustainability and its impact on creating long term competitive advantages for organisations
- Critically evaluate roles and responsibilities of sustainable strategic managers and how to apply tools of strategic business management to problems of sustainability.
- Negotiate, influence, and agree roles and rewards within founder teams in entrepreneurial and business settings, doing so in a legitimate ethical manner.
- Develop attributes and capabilities for business success in a complex and changing environment
Assignment 2 – Women Entrepreneurs Case
This assignment assesses how entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability shape strategy in early-stage ventures. Using the Women Entrepreneurs in Miami case, evaluate how founders build viable businesses while facing structural barriers, resource constraints, and mission-driven goals.
Exercise 1 (1000 words – LO2)
Using relevant entrepreneurship and innovation theory, analyse the key challenges faced by the women founders. You may focus on:
- Access to finance and networks
- Positioning of their ventures and customer targeting
- Sustainability-driven value propositions
- Barriers in the entrepreneurial ecosystem
Explain how these issues create trade-offs between growth, mission, financial sustainability, and stakeholder expectations.
Exercise 2 (1000 words – LO3)
Propose a strategic response to the above challenges, supported by appropriate frameworks (e.g., stakeholder theory, effectuation, sustainability strategy).
Address:
- Growth or scaling approach (e.g., partnerships, digital expansion, franchise models)
- Funding and financial pathway (quantitative analysis and project management)
- Market positioning and customer selection
- How your recommendations support long-term impact and financial viability
